WizWar is an excellent Beer and Pretzels game! Too bad a brother has the family version to play with his kids when they get old enough, or we'd be playing it in a bar near you! I see that Chessex is still promising a new version ...

Well there are just too many to list, but the off-the-wall variety always seem to stick in my head. There are two in particular.

1. Frag: A game that simulates the ever so popular first person shooters like doom, quake, and UT. It's a little slower than these vidio games, but who cares....it's awsome.

2. Knights of the Dinner Table (the game title eludes me): Here you play one of the characters from the comic book of the same name. You run around scumming for treasure, and trying to avoid the hordes of orcs that the game master throws at you.
This is almost as much of a free-for-all as frag, but far more insidious. Plus, it has a 2 hour time limit, which means you can always get a couple of games in.

I've been missing out on a lot of game time since I started school again....damn academia wasting my time :(

btw, for any of you who've ever played a CheapAss game, I've started a tribe specifically for discussion about these wonderful, cheap products at cheapassgames.tribe.net

Let's kick things off with the obvious: what are some of your favorite games?

Settlers of Catan - Do I even need to elaborate?

Puerto Rico - The best damn game to be released since Catan, and possibly the best in a decade. No luck, no downtime, and no single or best way to win means gaming heaven for 3-5 players. I'll elaborate in a seperate post/love fest.

Illuminati - Surreal humor, gleefully attacking your fellow players, and being a backstabbing sonuvabitch are the highlights here. The non-sequiter game of global conquest ("The Post Office and the Cycle Gangs attempt to control the Flat Earthers") may take a while (roughly three hours), but is a consistent local favorite.

TransAmerica - A light, fluffy little train game about laying down rails and singing songs about each city you connect to. The later is a house rule, but you'll find it happens in your games, too. The only game I play with a mandatory bitching phase.

Have you played Domaine, the new Klaus Tauber game? I played several weeks ago, and thought it had potential.

Which version of Settlers do you prefer? We like Cities and Knights the best. Hated Stone Age.

Our group here in Albuquerque meets twice a month and the members are always coming up with something I never heard of which is really great.

I have to agree with you re Puerto Rico. I recently played one that had just a touch of the flavor of Puerto Rico called Citadels. It's got that "migrating first player" and "I get to choose a different role" mechanics though the play is much simpler and the game is very short. We did a three player in about 30 minites.

I've played all the Settlers games and rather like the "Stone Age" version though before that Cities and Knight was my fav. They seem to just keep improving it.

Cosmic Encounters has been a multi-decade favorite of mine and is well worth a look.

Arkham Horror is a great game long out of print. They've been talking about a re-release for two years ... maybe it will happen soon. Definitely worth a look.

I also played Funkenschlag which reminds me of the various train games like Euro Rails but is a game about producing electric power. You create routes and upgrade your power plants to be the one to supply more cities than anyone else. I think the commodity market (for coal, oil, ... to run plant) pricing scheme is one of the best I've every seen. Simple yet sophisticated. The game is a little on the long side though.

Another new one I had to buy for my family is Alhambra. It's a simple card and tile games about building cities. Clean mechanincs. Very fast turns. Runs about an hour.

Finally, Goldlands: a game about exploring the Amazon. I've played several on this theme and this is the best. Again, clean simple mechaincs fairly fast play good game length. Check it out.

Regards

Absolute favorite: TALISMAN. I want to find all the old first edition sets, as I only have the 2nd edition which isn't quite as good, imo.

Also rans:

Settlers of Catan - I like playing this with both the Seafarers and the Cities and Knights expansions.

Cosmic Encounter - I have the new Hasbro release, and am hoping that they release expansions with new aliens for it.

Axis & Allies - Had this stolen from me 5 times while living in the barracks. Only thing that got stolen more frequently than my leatherman.

Wow, we've got people linking Puerto Rico and Illuminati together! That's impressive. Two very different but great games so I guess it makes sense.

I'm going to bring up some of my old time favorites:

Dune: Each "house" is wildly different yet very well balanced. Naturally you're fighting over the spice but the goal of the game is to capture 3 strongholds. Of course, the option to form alliances facilitates this but also makes for a nice twist.

Kremlin: You secretly assign political influence to Russian politicians. You expose your influence only at the time you wish to take control. I love this game as people often fight over the same politicians and even promote someone up the ladder only to find out they have 1 less point on him/her. The fact that the people are getting more and more stressed out and start dying is an entertaining aspect.

Junta is really good when you've got a lot of people. Not so good with just a few.

I recently played a game of Die Machar which is a simulation of German Elections. The material doesn't seem very interesting but the game is actually pretty gripping. It took us 8 hours to get through our first game with much fumbling over the rules, but I think the next time we play we'll do close to half that.

I recently played a game with the unlikely name of "Fische Fluppen Frikadellen". Another German import. It's got a weak back story about saving a princess, but the game itself has unusual mechanics that make for deep strategy. It also has an interesting feature that with multiple copies of the game, it can support up to 15 players (max 5 per set). In the mutli-set version, players must move between sets to reach win conditions. We played with seven (so just a little over the one set max) and it worked fairly well except that the people at the table with three players moved along much more quickly than at the table with four. I think mostly due to the setup on the three player board being a little easier, having fewer players and just because the three were the more speed-chess variety of thinkers. Anyway, interesting enough for me to acquire a copy from Fun Again Games.

Michael Schacht's Industria is probably my current favourite. Yet again he has a delightful twist on an auction mechanic, and then plays the connection game to a farethewell, producing a game with trivial rules and very subtle implications. Brilliant.

Other treasures include Knisia's Ra (tho I'm beginning to tire of it after ~20 plays), Moon's Elfengold and Union Pacific, Wallace's Age of Steam (yowzers! Boy did I crash and burn on my first game!), Teuber's Lowenherz (Domaine is Loewnherz with all the good bits taken out), Dorn's Traders of Genoa (the best of the negotiation games) etc.

Yeah, I far prefer Lowenherz, finding Domaine dry and generally tepid. Lowenherz conversely I found much more involving with interestingly nasty decisions, solid interaction mechanics, and a far more interesting play style.

As for Settlers I prefer the game as Teuber initially designed it: Seafarers of Catan.

I have to echo Settlers and Illuminati... but no one has mentioned WizWar. WizWar kicks ass, and it can be played drunk. So can Scrabble, now that I think of it.

And as ashamed as I am to admit it, Magic The Gathering was a _really_ clever game before everyone when totally insane.

Oh let's see... there's the usual classics - like Monopoly (especially if you turn it into a drinking game), Risk, Axis & Allies, Backgammon, etc... and the fun-social games where ya usually end up revealing way too much about yourself & frightening your friends - like Scattergories, Taboo, Scruples, Zobmondo, etc.

I haven't played Illuminati in YEARS - and the last time I checked, boy had it changed over the time I was away.

Actually the initially Settlers from Teuber was Cities and Knights, but the editor thought it was to complex to get a big adiunce. And the editor was right. The Settlers of Catan set off sleeping game fever in Germany. Also ordinary people began to play games what before only was something for children and "immature males".
